When you want to get a handle on how an OS really works, learn the base api. Don't fsck around with the multi-layered abstractions (like MFC) which will just waste your time and obscure how things really work.

I have come to the inevitable conclusion that:

• MFC is destined to be forgotten, with prejudice
• WIN32 is a headache, but it makes sense
• I should stick with Python/wxWidgets
• I should start writing extensions for the above and making them open source

Last year I decided to stick with Python for as much coding as possible, and then I started to break this rule by going with some MFC and C# coding. You know what? I was right to start with. Write a Python extension for all of the code that needs to be optimized, and leave the rest as Python code. Added bonus: code works with little to no changes on Windows/OSX/Linux/BSD/.....

New axiom: Be as pragmatic as possible, but no more.
