AMD64 and Portage

Hey! Enki has moved his blog to Armyofevilrobots.com. Check it out after you are done here. This page is going nowhere though...

Well, I learned portage over the last few days. Holy crap is it a simple (read as elegant, not stupid) piece of code.

I have gotten a working AMD64/Gentoo 2.6.1 Kernel .config here as well in case you need it. Should allow booting (even off of sata) on any k8t800 board. If you can't boot off of the Via 8237 SATA, try the promise (if you got one).

I have also learned that you should NEVER have the following in your USE flags in your make.conf for AMD64...

  • dvb
  • avi
  • APM
List subject to change. Don't ask why, just trust me on this.

If you should find that you get weird errors from emerge, or that your favourite package is masked, feel free to add "~amd64" to the line KEYWORDS="....." at the top of the file. Usually, the build will just work (especially if it builds on 64 bit sparc). Emerge with:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" sudo emerge packagename
and it will probably just work. The reason for all of the masked packages are because they have not yet been tested.

Have fun!
