Why Cling To Windows

Hey! Enki has moved his blog to Armyofevilrobots.com. Check it out after you are done here. This page is going nowhere though...

I have had TONS of discussions with people about switching to Linux instead of Windows, and on why they don't do it. The one argument, that I used to concur with is that "There is too much to learn on Linux, and I already know Windows".

Not anymore.

Just getting a Windows computer to stay functional is now in many ways more complicated than maintaining an enterprise Linux server. I can say this, since I do both professionally.

I just had to clean a friend's computer up after he was infected with three (count 'em... three) separate worms that he was contracted when he plugged his computer into the internet in order to run Windows Update for the first time1.

I had to spend a great deal of time fixing these worms, installing a firewall, and updating his system in order to get his system back up. Much of this was highly technical work.

My friend just wants to run photoshop and flash. I run these programs with no trouble at all on WINE. Why should he have to worry about this crap? All the major Linux distros have had firewalls in place by default for YEARS. Let us not forget that Linux ACTUALLY HAS A SECURITY SYSTEM THAT WORKS2.

1: Seems you have to install (by default anyways) Internet Explorer 6 and SP4 before you can install the rpc fix to avoid those worms.

2: Everybody agrees that COM is broken. What makes COM really bad is that there is very little auditing to prove that COM objects are safe when they claim to be, and that the system is brutally complicated. What is really scary though, is that Windows is effectively built upon the shifting sands of COM objects.

This was the week of many errands. Many things to pick up. Many
places to be. New places. Places you ain't never seen. Places I
ain't never been. In but a few short days, I've begun to
understand why an old friend of mine refers to himself (or once
did) as "the Sophist," and I have begun to see the beauty of
Periclean rhetorical tradition. Or, at least, his small part of
the pie. I've even found a new corner to buy a good cup of
coffee.
